THEOLOGY OF TRIALS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

THEOLOGY OF TRIALS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

God uses suffering in his plan for our lives. 2 Thessalonians 1:1-3.This letter is from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. It is written to the church in Thessalonica, you who belong to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace? Dear brothers and sisters, we always thank God for you, as is right, for we are thankful that your faith is flourishing and you are all growing in love for each other.Jesus was willing to obey God even when it meant suffering. Hebrews 5: 8.So even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. Problems help us mature. James 1:2-4 . . . Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything. When we suffer, we share in the suffering of Christ. 1 Peter 4:12-14.Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—because these trials will make you partners with Christ in his suffering, and afterward you will have the wonderful joy of sharing his glory when it is displayed to the entire world. Be happy if you are insulted for being a Christian, for then the glorious Spirit of God will come upon you.Trials help refine our character.1 Peter 1:6-9 . . . So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while. These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him, you trust him; and even now you are happy with a glorious, inexpressible joy. Your reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.Trials help train us to be more fruitful.Hebrews 12:11 . . . No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.Stability during TrialsThis should be one of the most premier Christian characteristics we possess since it is inevitable that we will face the fiery trials of this world. When we read of the early martyrs and those in the middle ages, we see that their stability caused them to lose their life for the sake of the Gospel. It is the strength to stand or endure. Probably one of the greatest examples of this is the trial of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3.If you are obedient to God, you can expect fiery trials (Dan 3:6 KJV) And whoso falleth not down and worshipped shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Our Faithfulness to God must overcome our fear of the fire (Dan 3:16 KJV) Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. We must face the fire and leave the results to God (Dan 3:17-18 KJV) If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thane hand, O king. {18} But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.Trials can free us from what binds us(Dan 3:25 KJV) He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.God will always be with us in our trials(Dan 3:25 KJV) He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.Our faithfulness will be a testimony to others that God is real (Dan 3:28-29 KJV) Then Nebuchadnezzar spoke, and said, blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. {29} Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill: because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort. Our faithfulness in trials will be a factor in our prosperity (Dan 3:30 KJV) Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon.
